Because cultured pearls are produced by an oyster, few pearls in a strand are exactly the same size. That's why pearl sizes for a necklace or bracelet are expressed as a range. When you see pearl size expressed as "6 to 6.5mm", for example, that means that no pearl in the strand is less than 6mm or greater than 6.5mm. A range variation of 0.5mm is considered an excellent size match.

Akoya Pearl Sizes

The most popular size for akoya cultured pearl bracelets and necklaces is 6.5 to 7mm.
